Seattle is known for its seafood from its various types of fresh oysters at Elliot’s Oyster Bar to clam chowder at Pike Place Chowder. Pike Place Market is a popular tourist attraction with fish markets and various seafood restaurant. However, Bainbridge Island is another popular area for great seafood, especially at Proper Fish. Add this spot to your itinerary and you will find yourself taking a short scenic ferry ride from downtown Seattle to Bainbridge Island. Best of all, a beautiful experience and some delicious food!
The Food
Proper Fish offers a small yet diverse menu with daily chowder specials. But the real spectacle here is their British fish & chips, where you get a nice long strip of fried cod (the long half of a cod filet). This popular dish is served with a side of tartar sauce, ketchup, lemon slices and mushy peas. The fish is crispy yet fluffy and all of the sides complement it so well. Even the mushy peas!
From the picture, you can see that I tried a few more items from the menu. I can never say no to lobster roll and the one served at Proper Fish is Connecticut-style, my fav! If you are not aware of the types of lobster roll, we got Connecticut- and Maine-style lobster roll. Connecticut-style lobster roll is served warm, where the lobster chunks are tossed in butter and can be topped with chives. Maine-style lobster roll serves cold lobster meat tossed with mayonnaise, celery, and tarragon. The lobster roll at Proper Fish was also delicious! The bread was fluffy and perfectly toasted while the lobster was buttery and perfectly salted. My only complaint is the fries for both dishes were slightly under-seasoned so pick up a salt shaker when you’re filling up your water cup or grabbing your utensils.
We also could not say no to chowder and Proper Fish rotate their chowder daily. We came on a Saturday and got the cod chowder, which is so perfect for summer. The chowder was creamy, the fish bits were fluffy, and the flavor was so pure. There was no gimmick with this chowder!
The Atmosphere
This restaurant is definitely gives you a boathouse-feel without being directly on the water, where it is narrow and long. The amount of seating here is limited so get here early or be ready to wait for a table as this place gets pretty crowded. You can always order for takeout as there are many benches and small tables throughout the area. There are about 4 tables outdoors that are placed in the front of the restaurant with more tables inside. When you enter the restaurant, you’ll be greeted at the register where you place your orders. Seats are first come, first serve. Utensils, napkins, salt & pepper, and water/water cups are ups for grabs at the end of the bar.
